The design process is often described as a series of loops where the designer combines knowledge and ideas. At an early stage - for some maybe even in the programming phase - it is important to specify the landscape problem to be solved and one way to do this is by analysing the landscape. On line with historical, spatial and other analyses a terrain analysis can reveal the design opportunities and constraints in designing the terrain. The example in this article is about placing a house with a terrace on a plot in a residential area. This might seem to be very simple and even though we accept the placement in plan (x,y) to keep it even more simple and only care about the elevation of the house a terrain analysis shows how complex this problem is. |
